In 2007-2008, a new component was added to ELLM called WOW or “Wings on Words” which was specifically developed for English Language Learners (ELL). Approximately 90% of the ELLM students in Immokalee come from homes in which English is either not spoken or is a second language. These children enter school and struggle to learn English while also trying to master early literacy (letters, for example). WOW provides teachers with the tools to support the specific learning needs of ELL students. The tools include books in which both English and Spanish tell the story and instructional strategies for teachers to support classroom lessons. Florida Gulf Coast University created this initiative and Naples Children and Education Foundation supported the effort.
