In the United States, the accreditation of a school or institution is voluntary and is based on an extensive evaluation of programs, governance, administration, finances, student processes, institutional resources, and community relations.

Accreditation ensures that specific standards and levels of quality are maintained. It also allows for students to transfer among schools.

There are six regional accrediting associations in the country. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accredits schools in Florida.
