Grade Point Average (GPA):  Important?
*GPA is one of the criteria college admission
*GPA is one of the basis for earning scholarships
*GPA is the determining factor for class rank

Grade Point Average (GPA):  How is it figured?
 First: Florida’s public schools award letter grades
A, B, C, D, F
 Second: Each letter is given a numeric value
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0
 Third:The grades are averaged (added together and divided by the number of credits attempted –  not all courses are worth the same number of credits)
 NOTE 1: Individual districts award added value for academically challenging courses.  The table below shows the differences.
 NOTE 2: The “weighted” (added value) GPA is generally not used by scholarships or colleges,  which look at transcripts and make their own determinations

Table of weights:  by county and by course type

**Collier adds points to GPA for each weighted course in which a “C” or better is earned by the ˝ credit (e.g.,  AP or Advanced Placement is weighted .04 per each ˝ credit
***Glades adds 1 point to each course [A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2]
**** Lee adds value in ˝ credit increments (e.g., AP is weighted .04 per ˝ credit); and is studying the                possibility of awarding honors credit to addition “Level 3” (upper level) courses
Example:    The chart below shows a comparison of grade values in the  region using the weights given in each district. The student's grades are indicated in the chart. The shaded area reflects the differences in GPAs by county.
