Miracle Plus 1 is a 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant from the Department of Education. It is an afterschool program designed to support academic achievement, provide enrichment opportunities from art to recreation, and involve families in educational and personal development opportunities. The Immokalee schools in the program represent 65% of the district's low performing students and 90% of the migrant students; 100% are Title I students. Miracle Plus 1 students’ unmet academic and personal development needs (as evidenced by academic, attendance, and discipline data) are addressed in a 3 hour, 4 days a week program that spans 36 weeks of the school year.
After the school day ends, students remain at their schools but in an environment that is uniquely “MP Place.” The students’ sense of belonging and understanding of citizenship and economics are enhanced as they “live” in a community and assume its related roles, responsibilities, leadership and service. MP Place provides its student citizens with opportunities for art, music, recreation/sports, science, 4-H, and Red Cross trainings throughout the year. Students are part of an active community in which they are academically supported individually or in small groups, choose activities in which to be involved, and have opportunities to showcase non-academic skills at “MP Pride” events held twice a year.
To support the students in meeting Florida and Collier County standards, Miracle Plus 1 incorporates both direct and disguised instruction. “Brain Power Hour” provides students homework and/or tutoring support based on the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) goals typically provided by their day school teachers. Miracle Plus 1 Thematic Units have been developed to frame and connect activities from multiple subject areas and include experiential learning components. Thematic Units (such as “Cockroach” and “Flight”) have been designed to be of high interest and are the highly engaging basis of Miracle Plus 1's academic enrichment. This range of instructional strategies and innovative activities ensures that student learning styles and needs are addressed. Because Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) is the primary partner, collaborative planning and implementation are on-going. A unique software program called STOPWatch (Student Tracking of Outcomes and Progress) has been developed by CCPS to link day school and the Miracle Plus 1 afterschool teachers in order to track student needs and progress. STOPWatch also assists in formative evaluations.
Parents and families are offered literacy and other educational opportunities through collaborations with the School District. Additionally, each school hosts Family Nights with various themes.
Miracle Plus 1 provides its students a view of a future through opportunities to make the connection between education and life choices/success and to explore career paths through guest speakers, projects, and partnerships with groups.
Previous Miracle grants have already made many accomplishments in the Immokalee schools. 63% of the 25% lowest achievers showed gains in reading, 79% of the 25% lowest achievers showed gains in math, 50% attained Level 3 or better on FCAT Reading and 58% attained Level 3 or better on FCAT Math. Miracle Plus 1 will be the next generation for a continuously improving program.
