Thematic units provide teachers with a useful way to organize their teaching over a certain time. During the unit, teachers integrate an area of study with meaningful and functional learning activities.
Themes may be focused on a specific content area or they may be on a more broad subject.
The activities for students can include projects in which students work independently or cooperatively to solve "real world" problems, discussions with other students and the teacher about what has been read or heard, etc.
This approach allows students to use the information in contexts outside of school.
