Making Instruction Relevant and Classroom Learning Experiential (MIRACLE) is structured by Project Based Learning Units (PBLs) and built on the principle of Personal Leadership – a combination of 7 Habits of Happy Kids (adapted from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) and Growth Mindsets.
The structure of MIRACLE University was established in 2012 with the intent for students to:
- become comfortable with the terms and places called “university,” “college,” academy,” and “institute”
- find success at these “post-secondary” – or after school – programs
- understand the value of earning credits
The “End in Mind”
Students’ personal leadership skills are developed and lead to academic and personal growth and success

MIRACLE University provides students the opportunity to earn “credits” as they rotate through the five main colleges: (1) Leadership Institute, (2) College of Business, (3) Academy of the Arts, (4) Institute of Technology and (5) Institute of Math & Science. Students also receive with credits for completing PBL units, maintaining good attendance, improving academics, practicing the 7 Habits and Growth Mindsets, and attending family nights. Credits are used as purchasing power in Holiday House, special field trips, and other opportunities.
The 7 Habits…..
“The 7 Habits of Happy Kids,” written by Sean & Stephen Covey, is a cornerstone of MIRACLE University. Students are introduced to:
- Habit #1: Be Proactive is the habit of choice
- Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind is the habit of vision
- Habit #3: Put first Things first is the habit of integrity and execution
- Habit #4: Think Win-Win is the habit of mutual benefit
- Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, then to Be Understood is the habit of mutual understanding
- Habit #6: Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation
- Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw is the habit of renewal
MIRACLE University students are introduced to growth mindsets. MU “professors” emphasize the value of building and maintaining a “growth” mindset, while eliminating a “fixed” mindset way of thinking.
|“Fixed” Mindset||“Growth” Mindset|
|I avoid challenges.||I embrace challenges.|
|I give up.||I persist.|
|I hurt from criticism.||I learn from criticism.|
|The world is scarce.||The world is abundant.|
|My destiny controls me.||I control my destiny.|
MIRACLE University has effective subcontracts and partnerships with United Arts Council (UAC), Boys and Girls Club of Collier County, The Holocaust Museum, and iTech. In particular and along with other Immokalee out-of-school-time programs, MIRACLE University benefits from resources from the Naples Children and Education Foundation (Winter Wine Festival), which provides additional enrichment and opportunities to afterschool students.
MIRACLE University staff consists of diverse individuals who believe in the future of Immokalee children: teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, and college and high school students. All staff members working within the program are individuals who have completed either the Southwest Florida Workforce Board or the Collier County School Board hiring process (including drug screening and background clearance).
